The Cover Template Generator is a tool that IngramSpark recommends for creating cover files. The template displays bleed and safety areas, and it also provides a free barcode. In addition, the template provides information such as spine width and document size.
If using an InDesign template:
The InDesign template will only open in the cloud version of InDesign. You may refer to the "Cover Set Up" section of the File Creation Guide, attached HERE, for instruction.
If using an IDML template:
The IDML template is an InDesign template that you do not need a specific version to use, perfect for older versions.
If using a PDF template:
Cover artwork cannot be placed on the template directly in Acrobat. If this is done, and not saved properly, all of the elements placed in Acrobat will drop out when processed and the file will be rejected.
If you are not using a graphic design program like InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, or Quark, then instructions for using the cover template can vary based on the program you are using. In most cases, the PDF can be used as an image. It can be placed in the background as an image, and the cover is created over it. The barcode is part of the cover template PDF in this case, and you will either have to place a barcode of your own or draw a box around the barcode and copy/paste to create a separate layer. You can, of course, submit it without a barcode and we will place one in the lower right corner of the back cover, at no cost. Please leave 1.75x1 inches free for barcode placement.
The PDF sent to publishers via the cover template generator is high resolution (300 PPI) at a specific size. Just because a program allows the template to be used, it does not guarantee that the program used will open it at the correct size and resolution, or save it at the correct size and resolution.
Full file requirements can be found in the File Creation Guide.

This is a very important – yet often overlooked – step in the process. Please open and review your newly created PDF to ensure that all elements are present and properly represented in your PDF prior to submitting it for printing. Incomplete or incorrect digital files will put your project behind schedule and could add charges to your account.
