Second Edition

I haven't done any of this before, so in that respect, I can't give you a good answer.

But why involve Amazon at all?

And a second edition must always have a new/different ISBN otherwise it will just be a revision.

On IngramSpark, you set the book title, the series title and the book number in the series. When you have approved the new (second edition) with these details, you can set the old one inactive. Then the new should take the old one's place in the book database (metadata).

I hope others will respond to your request here, at least an IngramSpark support person.

I've helped with the logistics of this process for many of my clients and it works. I'd recommend not making the old edition unavailable until AFTER you've published your new edition. Then request that Amazon link the two editions together (once you've seen the new edition listed). This will allow any reviews that were on the old edition to transition over to your new edition. Then un-publish your old edition (via KDP). There will always be a listing of the old edition of your book on Amazon, but in time your new edition will show up in searches more often.

There would be no need to "transfer" the title to Ingram if you aren't using Expanded Distribution (you shouldn't be using Expanded Distribution if you are using Ingram anyway). So you'd basically publish the new edition on Ingram Spark with the same ISBN you used for the book on KDP.

    Eric,

I'm comfortable with the process on the KDP side. It's very well documented how to add a second edition and not lose reviews. It's nice to hear that other people are doing this too. Thanks.

My question is about IngramSpark. When do I inactivate the first edition on Ingram Spark? After I've published the Second Edition or before or does it matter? And is there a linking process first like there is on KDP?

It's basically the same principle as KDP. When you know that your new edition on Ingram Spark is ready to go (it's been reviewed, you've gotten your proof, you like it), then enable distribution for your new edition. After that, disable distribution for your old edition. You'll have to make a direct request via Ingram support since there is no button available to disable it yourself.

There'd be no "linking" process for the "Ingram book" side of things because you would have already linked the "KDP book". The book will not get listed twice unless you used separate ISBNs, which I do NOT suggest you do. So you don't have to worry about linking your "Ingram book" as the book will have already been listed and linked by you as a result of publishing your KDP book.

So if you publish on KDP first (which I recommend you do), then you'd link the separate editions when you see them both listed. But if you publish on Ingram first, you'd link the separate editions when you see them. So which ever platform you decide to publish with first, you only have to request the linking of the books once.
