I use Adobe InDesign for the final setup and generating the pdf files, but I can tell you how to set left/right margins in Words. I use the Danish edition, so the names may vary:

Go to the Layout tab and choose Page Settings.

In the Margin tab set your Binding Margin (to the extra space you want at the spine).

You may also want to go to the Layout tab and check the "Different even and odd" header/footer.

The 0.5 inch margins are only a recommendation. The bleed is if you have graphics to the edge. I use a version number after the file number like isbn_txt03.pdf.

    Remember to embed the fonts.

You may find a pdf printer program that can generate the PDF/X-1a:2001 or PDF/X-3:2002 format.

Be aware of the print costs for books 300+ pages.

If you use a computer (not Mac) and Word 2007 or earlier, I may have a solution for generating the pdf from Word.

I AM using Word 2007! What luck! I have heard that it is possible to generate a pdf from Word, but I haven't gotten that far yet.

I can't set up a custom size of paper like I thought I could, so I set my margins to the 5.5 x 8.5 inch size. Now I'm wondering if it matters which side of the page that nearly 3 inches of extra space gets put on. The way I've got it set up now, all that extra space is on the binding side. Should I move it to the outside of the page?

Thank you so much for your help!

    1) I don't understand why you can't use the custom size paper in Word. How should IngramSpark know where to trim the book block down to 5.5 x 8.5 inch?

    2) What operating system do you use? Windows 10?

    3) I need an e-mail address to send you a link to Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended and some related files, that will make a tab in Word to generate the pdf.
