    I THINK you can use 600 dpi mono colour.

    You can use TIFF with a transparent background if for example Photoshop.

    The program Inkscape (www.inkscape.org) also works with SVG.

     

    I hope IS will return with a help on the mono/grey scale question.

    I know this is a very old thread...

    JPEG does not natively support background transparency. You'll need to use PNG instead.

    Line drawings as vector images like SVG, will print better than if made into raster images like JPEG or PNG.
